BOSTON, September 05, 2024 — All Hands AI, a company making open source AI to help developers build software, today announced that it’s raised $5 million in seed funding. Menlo led the round, with additional investors including Pillar VC, Betaworks, and Rebellion, as well as a number of angels including Hugging Face Co-Founder Thom Wolf; Cloudera Co-Founder Jeff Hammerbacher; and PyTorch creator and Meta VP Soumith Chintala. "AI has become an invaluable part of the software engineer's toolchain, but so far it's been limited to ‘smarter’ autocomplete. And the most powerful AI for writing code is being built behind closed doors, in a way that's totally opaque to developers" said Robert Brennan, co-founder and CEO of All Hands AI. “At All Hands, we’re building open source AI agents that can tackle all the toil involved in an engineer's day-to-day work, helping them ship faster and focus on what they do best: creative problem solving. And we're doing it in the open, under the MIT license." The company’s flagship project, [OpenHands](https://github.com/All-Hands-AI/OpenHands) (formerly OpenDevin), is an open-source software development agent that can autonomously solve software development tasks end-to-end. All Hands launched OpenHands on GitHub in the spring of 2024, and the AI agent has already attracted a community of thousands. The project has more than 30,000 stars on GitHub and 180 unique contributors, including dozens from major academic institutions. It has become a gathering point where academic scientists and developers in industry come together to push the state of the art forward. "AI is going to completely change how developers work. But it's not going to change their preference for adopting open source, especially when it comes to technology that affects their day-to-day work," said Joff Redfern, a partner at Menlo Ventures and former Chief Product Officer at Atlassian. "By building in the open, All Hands is helping the software engineering community work toward an ideal AI-powered development experience." "All Hands AI has built the largest open source community developing coding agents," added Parker McKee, partner at Pillar VC. "Having evaluated numerous projects in this space, we believe that open source will ultimately win the day. We look forward to supporting the community's continued efforts to develop the world’s highest utility software development system." All Hands’ co-founders, Robert Brennan, Xingyao Wang, and Graham Neubig, PhD, have significant experience in artificial intelligence. Dr. Neubig is an associate professor at the Language Technologies Institute of Carnegie Mellon University. He and his collaborators have been responsible for core advances in AI agents, including some of the first open-source large language models of code and agents that perform tasks on the web. Brennan has spent his career in software development, with previous positions including senior software engineer at Google, and VP of product development for Fairwinds. Wang is a CS PhD candidate at UIUC. His research focuses on interactive AI agents that assist humans by interacting with the world through programming. Wang's experience includes work on multimodal pre-training at Google and unit-test generation at Microsoft. ## About All Hands AI All Hands AI's mission is to build AI tools to help developers build software faster and better, and do it in the open.
